OrphanIT - Business Not Aid Approach

WHO WE ARE:
OrphanIT is an internationally award winning, non profit with a difference.

We’ve delivered over US$100,000 of outsourced ICT jobs to youth at telecentres in developing nations remotely since 2001. We’ve also helped raise over AU$500,000 which has gone towards helping youth in developing nations with scholarships, IT training, special dispensations leading towards offline and online jobs, which in many cases, our network has provided. Several of our projects have gone onto win international awards for NGO sustainability. OrphanIT’s mission is very focused on the “Business Not Aid” approach.

WHAT WE’RE DOING:
We have been involved in educating and employing youth at telecentres (Wikipedia description - Telecentre) since 2001 starting with our involvement in funding/building/managing the 1st telecentre in the Philippines located in Taft Avenue, Ermita.

That centre has now been succesfully integrated into a microfinance organisation working with over 10,000 families in the local baranguays of Manila City.

In order to be able to take these sustainable, job creation programs to more communities we have been working with a team of open source software developers to create new tools which can be used by the most junior telecentre student through to the most senior teacher, developer or programmer at almost any telecentre worldwide. This software is called ORCA and we anticipate it will be available in over 12 languages by the end of 2007.

This open source, multilingual, website building tool allows telecentres students with little or no HTML skills to build code compliant, Google-friendly websites with zero technical difficulties. The end user is walked through a step by step wizard, in their language, for the setup of each website they build for a remote client or their own community.

What separates the ORCA website building platform from other content management systems are it’s multilingual capabilities, it’s very compliant, best of breed code and it’s inbuilt, automatic search engine optimization tools.

ORCA is already successfully being tested in several centres we are working with in the Philippines, India, Brazil, Bangladesh and shortly Africa. We expect to be able to release a beta version into the telecentre movement mid 2007.

There will be a small NGO hosting fee which we are finalizing details of now.

WHY WE ARE DOING IT:
By creating easy-to-use software tools that are custom built for telecentres worldwide we believe that more telecentres can become self sustainanble in the long run. There are many centres in developing nations and emerging market communities. with just dial-up internet access, who can use ORCA to build websites and other Remote IT services for their own clients around the world and earn a decent and real income for themselves and their families. OrphanIT helps with this whole process.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT:
This Web Building platform is a world first in the digital divide community and the methodology has been field tested over the last three years. It has been proven to successfully provide significant extra income to the telecentre communities we have been working with.

It is in essence Cause Related Outsourcing. As opposed to just outsourcing to some pure profit making firm you now have the option of outsourcing, getting the same service, at the same price and helping build communities in developing nations.

We are a registered charity in Manila, Philippines with a support headquarters based in Byron Bay, Australia and currently operate several, award winning, aid development websites and several key consultancy contracts with leading corporate and development agencies delivering innovative and sustainable ICT4D programs for youth projects in developing nations.
